The Purpose of the LIVING CODE is to help SIETAR USA members and its Board of Directors to:

• Maintain and advance expectations of high ethical standards in our practice and in our interactions with colleagues, clients, the media, and all organizations with whom one has contact.
• Stimulate continued conversations about ethics among members and the Board to support and advance ethical practice.
• Provide intercultural, diversity, equity and inclusion services to individuals and organizations that reflect the values of SIETAR USA.
• Establish and follow a transparent process for managing complaints about the ethical behavior of SIETAR USA members and the SIETAR USA Board.

History

The SIETAR USA Living Code of Ethical Behavior serves as a guide to ethical professional practice in the fields of intercultural, diversity, equity, and inclusion education, training, and research. Its origins trace back to SIETAR International’s early work on ethical standards in intercultural work. As SIETAR USA evolved, members recognized the need for an ethical framework specific to the organization. Over time, dedicated individuals have contributed to shaping and refining the Living Code to reflect the principles and responsibilities of professionals in this field.

To ensure the Code remains relevant, it continues to be examined through a DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) lens and is informed by ethical standards developed within the SIETAR community. As the world changes, so must our ethical guidelines, maintaining alignment with contemporary professional and societal expectations.

SIETAR USA is committed to combating social injustice and intolerance through intercultural dialogue, ethical leadership, and responsible action to promote understanding. The Living Code of Ethical Behavior establishes standards of conduct that guide SIETAR USA members in their professional roles. It upholds core values, including diversity, respect, equity, integrity, objectivity, sustainability, community, and inclusion.

Creating ethical principles is an ongoing and dynamic process that requires self-reflection and continuous evaluation, both individually and organizationally. Members who commit to the ethical standards set forth in the Living Code may use the designation of a SIETAR USA Ethical Interculturalist. Those who do not uphold these principles may face a loss of membership privileges.

SIETAR USA provides a simple process for members to publicly commit to these ethical standards. Members who choose to abide by the Living Code receive the designation of “Ethical Interculturalist” and may be listed as such on the SIETAR USA website.

The Living Code of Ethical Behavior is designed to evolve alongside our profession and the broader world. It incorporates key elements from ethical codes in related fields while also addressing the unique nature of intercultural work. By adhering to these ethical principles, members contribute to the credibility and integrity of the field, reinforcing its value to clients, employers, and the broader professional community.
