WEBINAR: Intercultural Pendulum: A Practical Model for Turbulent Times
September 14, 2022 - 11:30 am-1:00 pm (US Eastern)
Sundae Schneider Bean, Intercultural Strategist, Transformation Facilitator, and Solution-Oriented Coach
Dr. Kris Acheson-Clair, Director of Purdue University’s Center for Intercultural Learning, Mentorship, Assessment and Research (CILMAR)
Several years ago, Kris and Sundae proposed that mapping the orientations of the Intercultural Development Continuum onto a pendulum would address many of the critiques aimed at the model by scholars and practitioners (Acheson & Schneider-Bean, 2019).
They illustrated how external forces (magnets) pull us towards too much focus on difference and too much focus on similarities in various contexts and how intentional strategies (anchors) can help us resist those pulls to develop and maintain intercultural competence.
In this session, Sundae and Kris will explicate the intercultural pendulum, providing opportunities for applications to participants’ experiences.
The focus will then shift to insights the pendulum offers to life in a pandemic era and politically polarized time.
