SIETAR USA statement on the recent anti-Muslim attacks in NZ
To Members and Friends of SIETAR USA:
The recent anti-Muslim massacre affects everyone and our hearts go out to all New Zealanders and especially the Muslims of New Zealand. As Omer Aziz wrote in the New York Times: racism begins with ideas and it ends with violence. For centuries, ideas about racial superiority have caused people to feel threatened no matter the situation and too many situations have ended in tragedy. It is not the world we want to live in, share with our family and friends, or raise our children. For our 2019 conference we found a quotation from Nelson Mandela: “It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.” We are using it because we believe that if change is to happen, it begins with us.
