President's Perspective

23 Jan 2019 10:19 AM | Brett Parry (Administrator)

Optimists greet the New Year with enthusiasm, expecting good things to happen, eager to get going. Pessimists tend to think of it as just another year when things can go wrong. As I begin my term as President of SIETAR USA, I am an eager optimist and ready to make things happen.

SIETAR USA greets the New Year with a full Executive Committee. New Board members Hamilton Cruz (Treasurer) and Justin Sitron (Secretary) complete the Executive Committee that also includes Holly Emert as Immediate Past President. Two new Board members fill the positions of Professional Development (Melinda Bullen) and Membership Outreach and Diversity (Sherri Tapp). These new voices add a new dimension to the Board discussions with their ideas and approaches.

The Board would not function nearly as well without the voices of veterans such as Julia Gaspar Bates (Local Groups Director), Brett Parry (Communication Director), and Holly Emert (Immediate Past President) who provide context as we move into the New Year.

Nor could it have functioned so well without the service of one outgoing Board member in particular: Monica Mumford. Over the years she served as the Treasurer and the Secretary and for the past two years she has been the Secretary/Treasurer. She joined SIETAR International in 1980 while a graduate student at Lesley College. Her devotion to SIETAR International and SIETAR USA has been exemplary.

I believe that SIETAR USA can be attractive to newcomers to the intercultural and the diversity and inclusion fields, as well as mid-career professionals and old timers. Therefore during my tenure as SIETAR USA President, I would like to focus on:

  • Membership: Celebrating Diversity. Exploring the relationship between the Intercultural and Diversity & Inclusion fields. Building a bridge. Attracting new members.
  • Conference: Our signature event which provides a sense of belonging, develops a sense of identity, provides nutrition for the members and the field.
  • Professional Development: Expanding the knowledge and professionalism of the field with webinars, in-depth newsletters, and full-day learning events.
