President's Address

Dear SIETAR members, friends, and colleagues,

Spring is just around the corner here in the United States, per the calendar if not per the weather! In this newsletter we are happy to share with you updates about the 2017 annual conference survey results, plans for future professional development offerings, as well as activities of SIETAR USA Local Groups. We also have two open positions on the SIETAR Board of Directors, Professional Development and Secretary. Please consider taking on one of these leadership roles yourself or share the opportunity with professional colleagues and acquaintances who would be excellent candidates.

Happy March and happy spring!

Holly Emert, Ph.D.

News from SIETAR USA Local Groups

Despite the geographic challenges for some of the local groups, they have been looking at innovative ways to bring their community together. SIETAR Florida is organizing an interactive panel presentation on the topic of Bias using video broadcast. Newly launched Ohio Intercultural is still recruiting members via its Facebook page and is setting up its first event—a presentation on IDI (Intercultural Development Inventory). SIETAR Minnesota launched the 2018 season with a meeting on Mindfulness in Teaching and Learning, will focus its next meeting on Pakistan as part of its culture-specific spotlight, and will host a special social gathering following the Forum on Workplace Inclusion event. The San Diego local group, still in its embryonic stages, has sent out surveys to local interculturalists to gauge their interest in different topics. They held a successful first meeting in January but had to cancel their next scheduled meeting due to insufficient registration. They will host an informal meeting in April. The Mid-Atlantic group is still getting off the ground with the organizers honing their vision statement, leadership team roles and programming schedule for 2018. They are hoping to launch quarterly f2f, virtual and leadership meetings focusing on intercultural, diversity and social justice topics.

Additionally, SIETAR USA has been contacted by people in Indiana and New York interested in starting up local groups. Stay tuned…

2017 Annual Conference Wrap Up

2017 Conference Banner

Final Survey results from the 2017 conference have been tallied for the 43 respondents. The overall satisfaction was positive (8.14 weighted average) and 81.4% of the respondents reported that they were very satisfied.  The pre-conference registration (9.02) and keynote speaker Carlos Cortes (8.95) received the highest ratings. Participants appreciated and commented on the high quality of the concurrent session presentations and speakers overall.

The hotel received a rating of 6.9; 57% of respondents fell into the “very satisfied” category. Location was the most-often mentioned problem. Respondents reported that it was not near the city center, there was no place to walk, and there were no nearby restaurants. The decision to use that hotel was based on cost and the availability of the conference center. It is understandable that attendees would have liked to be in the center city or on the waterfront but we couldn’t do that at the price we got for room rates, food and beverages, and meeting rooms. Two questions were asked about the Whova app (new for the 2017 conference) that had all the session descriptions on it as well as a communication function. Regarding use: 90.7% said they used the app; only 9.3% said they did not. One respondent liked using the app before arriving at the conference. Others mentioned that roaming charges for international attendees was a problem. Regarding satisfaction with the app, the average rating was 7.23 with 59% indicating they were “very satisfied.”  SIETAR USA plans to continue use of a conference app in the future given the success of the Whova app.

Conference Co-Chair Sandy Fowler stated, "Overall, I think we can feel pretty good about this conference. Many of the critical responses are really matters of choice and preference. If our sample of 43 is representative of the entire group, most people seemed to appreciate having the opportunity to learn and network in a good, stimulating environment."
